Lebanese political actualities in August 2007.

On August 6, 2007: Interpretation of the results of the one deputy election in Northern Metn, in Lebanon.

The Candidate of the Free Patriotic Movement, Doctor Camille KHOURY gained the deputy function against Mr. Amine GEMAYEL, former president of the republic, by a difference in approximately 400 votes out of approximately 80000 voters whereas the electoral roll adds up approximately 160000 registered voters.

The LSTDO proposed the vote of the democrats in Northern Metn in favor of Mr. Amine GEMAYEL for the principal reason which he is part in the effort of independence in the program of the group of 14 March. The General AOUN and his Movement put himself in a bad position to be tied with the prosyrian groups which threaten the independence of the country.

The combat for the democracy and the independence of Lebanon obliges us to take choices even if there is not complete satisfaction from the political attitude of our candidate. Often, in policy, we must choose among the least bad.

But, we are democratic, and we congratulate Doctor Camille KHOURY, by hoping that he contributes to clarify within his Movement the relations between the Free Patriotic Movement and the Hezbollah weapons.

The LSTDO continues to hope that part of the deputies of the Free Patriotic Movement can join the group of 14 March before the presidential expiry to safeguard the good functioning of the State and not to remain an instrument of the division of the Christians between the hands of the pro Syrians.

However, these by-elections in Northern Metn recall to the conscience of the democratic people of Lebanon:

- That more than 50% of the voters are dissatisfied at the same time from the Free Patriotic Movement of the General Michel AOUN and the attitudes of the group of March 14 in the power of SANIORA government. They did not consider it useful to vote. It is a proof that the current democracy in Lebanon presents dysfunctions and there are no political personalities really representative of the wishes of the people. I would even say that the politicians in Lebanon confiscate the State powers and assert themselves without having any absolute majority to support them. Doctor Camille KHOURY is elected today by 25% of the voters of the NORTHERN METN!

- The lie maintained by General AOUN for two years saying that he represents the wishes of 70% of the Christians of Lebanon has been proven. The observers of democratic culture understood since the transfer of the General towards alliances with his former enemies, that he betrayed the hopes of many Lebanese Christians who are convinced that nothing can be done without the disarmament of all the illegal militia on the Lebanese ground. The General sacrificed most of his life for the fight on the ideas now defended by the group of March 14. We know that he still has much energy and good ideas for Lebanon, but without clarification of his flirt with Hezbollah and its weapons, the majority of the Christians of Lebanon do not have confidence at his person.

- In spite of the compassion felt per many Lebanese vis-a-vis the assassination of his son, Mr. Amine GEMAYEL obtained only 25% of the voters of the NORTHERN METN or 50% of the registered voters. GEMAYEL Family fights since the independence of LEBANON in 1936-1943 to preserve the country. But, like all the other feudal families, the interest of the family passes before any other consideration. The children of peasants, the modest young people with weak means, the workers without decent incomes but sometimes seemingly supported by these feudalists, the unemployed who migrated from the country because of these feudal usurpers of the goods of the State, the academics which sought to remain in the country but without being helped to find an employment, the industrialists which clung to their native lands in spite of the corruption and the insecurity maintained by the feudal mafias, all sacrificed part of their life, their money and their health to try to correct the functioning of this country. There are still people who follow <the feudal tradition>, but there are fortunately more and more democrats who want their rights and which prefer to move away from the feudal families hoping to draw them aside from the State powers. Mr. Amine GEMAYEL and his family made proof in their resumption in hands recently of the KATAEB party that this last is a tool for the power of this family. He is far from the democratic principles posted to attract the sympathizers. He is not alone in this behavior. The majority of the Lebanese political chiefs are the feudal ones who fight for a share in the State powers. We think that feudalism and capitalism in the group of on March 14 made flee voters in favor of General AOUN. This last made election campaign against the injustices and the corruption of the persons in charge of the State powers.

- In its independent position from the political movements currently in conflict in Lebanon, the LSTDO in its realism still preaches a bringing together of the Free Patriotic Movement with the group of March 14 in the hope of an agreement on a program based on the independence and the democratic reforms in Lebanon. Alliance is logical between these political formations whereas current bonds between the Free Patriotic Movement and the prosyrian ones are abnormal and cannot continue. This bringing together appears essential to us before the expiry of the presidential elections before November 2007.

- In its positioning, the LSTDO is not interested in the characters and moods of the political personalities. It prefers to seek the interest of the citizens in a democratic and peaceful functioning in the country. But a political leader is held to respect the promises that he held in front of his voters. He must justify everything in front of the people. Otherwise, in the event of obvious contradiction, he must resign of its electoral mandate.
