Lebanese actualities in July 2007, elction conflict.

The election campaign in NORTHERN METN was fed by verbal violence of the various political leaders.

The candidature of Mr. Amine GEMAYEL, former president of the republic, for the deputy post in the place of his assassinated son Pierre GEMAYEL, is supported by KATAEB party, and the political group of 14 March of SANIORA government. The party of the Lebanese Forces supports him too.

Doctor Camille KHOURY is the candidate of the Free Patriotic Movement of the General Michel AOUN. The group of 8 March, pro Syrian, supports him too.

The tensions between people of the district are worsened by the accusations launched by the political leaders, particularly, the declarations of Amine GEMAYEL and Michel AOUN. The behavior of people is impassioned at the time of the elections and one fears public disorders.

All the arguments are exploited in a direction or another by the candidates. It becomes difficult for the voter to take account of all the criteria for the choice of the candidate.

The General AOUN and his Movement have a patriotic past. He continues to affirm that his program for Lebanon did not change. But much of Christians lost confidence to him since he becomes savagely hostile against the 14 March group and he created bonds with the Lebanese pro Syrian movements. His agreement with HEZBOLLAH to pacify the tensions is provisional except if he has promises from HEZBOLLAH to deliver its weapons to the Lebanese State and to conform to the Constitution and the resolutions of the United Nations. No assertion in this direction is known.

Mr. Amine GEMAYEL, former president of the republic, comes from a family of militants for independence since tens of years. It makes the point that his son, Pierre GEMAYEL, was assassinated by the Syrian regime, and that it is of his duty to continue the defense of the Lebanese cause. Political leaders wish that he becomes appointed without election taking into account the moral traditions in the METN and owing to the fact that his assassinated son had to be replaced.

In Nahr El Bared, the ramming of the camp continues since May 20, 2007, by the army. Curiously, there are more deaths among the soldiers than among the terrorists of Fateh Al Islam. The engagements are prolonged in spite of American assistances in ammunitions dispatched with haste. Hezbollah and the pro Syrians do not appear to support the army clearly. The lengthening of the duration of the engagements is related on the underground fortifications in the camp and the difficulty of the urban combat without adapted air means.

II Position of the LSTDO:

About the elections for a Maronite deputy in the NORTHERN METN, we regret initially the passion character of Lebanese which causes stupid tensions between people whereas it is simply a question of peacefully choosing the elected official who appears closest to the wishes of the majority of people. It does not matter for us who will gain as a personality or a political obedience. In front of the selection criteria which are complex and numerous, it is necessary to be determined on the essential subjects for the future of Lebanon.

Thus, the LSTDO advised the vote for Mr. Amine GEMAYEL for the following reasons:

- His son was assassinated by the enemies of Lebanon whereas he fought for democratic and independent Lebanon and the rebuilding of a State of right.

- He took part of the group of 14 March which manages the crisis on the way of the independence and the modernism of the country.

- The group of General AOUN and Doctor KHOURY have certainly reasons to believe in their programs, but they do not give us sufficient evidence that their choices to be combined with the prosyrian ones can lead to the detachment of the country from Syrian hegemony and the complete disarmament of the terrorist groups on the Lebanese ground.

- The socio economic arguments, presented besides on the two sides of the election campaign, pass in the second plan in front of the gravity of the essential causes of independence, the democracy and the safety of the Lebanese people.

About the combat in Nahr El Bared, all the Lebanese people must support the army in this test of suffering and martyrdom, caused by terrorists who do not have any human feeling and who massacred the innocent persons.

Since 1973, at the beginning of the civil war, there were Lebanese generals who recommended the complete disarmament of the Palestinian camps. The foreign interferences of the close countries had influenced the carefree political leaders at that time. What it made possible the civil war to appear in 1976 and to leave the State until today at mercy of the groups armed on the Lebanese ground.
